Tropeano was impressive in his season debut Monday in Oakland. He made that start along with today’s start filling in for the injured Andrew Heaney and finds himself in something of a competition with Matt Shoemaker for the final rotation spot when Tyler Skaggs returns from his rehab in a few weeks. In Monday’s start, Tropeano tossed 5 scoreless innings giving up 6 hits & 2 walks while striking out 6 with an impressive slider. He took the W in a game the Angels won 4-1.

Kyle Gibson (0-2, 4.22 ERA)

Gibson will be making his third start of the season this afternoon after taking a couple of tough luck losses in his first two thanks to poor run support from the Twins’ offense. In his season debut against Baltimore, Gibson gave up 4 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings. In his last outing Monday against the White Sox, he gave up 3 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Twins lost the Baltimore game 4-2 and the White Sox game 4-1.

Game Notes

  • Gibson didn’t fare particularly well in two starts against the Halos last season, going 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA. Over his career, he’s winless against the Angels, posting a 7.18 ERA in five starts.
  • CJ Cron and Mike Trout have enjoyed the greatest success among Angels hitters against Gibson, albeit in a small sample size. Cron is 3-for-7, while Trout is 3-for-8 with a homer and three RBIs. Albert Pujols is the only other Angels batter to go deep off Gibson.
  • The Twins’ sample size against Tropeano is even smaller, as they have a combined three plate appearances against him.
