Felix Hernandez was originally slated to pitch tonight’s game for Seattle, but he has been scratched due to illness. Because of the late scratch, Iwakuma has been bumped up a day to take his place this evening, but he will still be on normal rest having not pitched since Sunday. Iwakuma has been solid if not spectacular this year, and in that Sunday start he allowed 4 runs on 8 hits over 7 innings, but took the loss to the Yankees as the Mariners lost the game 4-3. Iwakuma has always pitched well against the Angels however. He is 8-3 with a 2.71 ERA in 14 career games against the Angels.

Tropeano has been spectacular while filling in for the injured Andrew Heaney in the Angels rotation so far in 2016. Over two starts so far, Tropeano has given up just one earned run in 10 2/3 innings, having won one start and taken a no-decision in the other. Tropeano’s last start was Sunday in Minnesota. In that game he gave up just one run on 5 hits over 5 2/3 innings, but took the no-decision in a game the Angels eventually lost 3-2.

Game Notes

  • This will be the first contest between the two American League West rivals since former Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto took over the same position with the Mariners. Dipoto has not been with Seattle on its nine-game road trip, but the Mariners are managed by Scott Servais — who was the Angels’ assistant GM in charge of scouting and player development the past four years — and also will start former Angels catcher Chris Iannetta behind the plate.
  • Tropeano has made just 13 Major League starts, but two have come against the Mariners, and he’s 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA. He won his MLB debut on Sept. 10, 2014, against Seattle while with the Astros, and he also took the win in a game last Sept. 15 at Safeco Field, allowing four hits and two runs over five innings in both outings.
