Despite pitching very well for the Angels over his 5 starts so far this season, Richards win-loss record is an indication of just how little run support he has seen from the Angel offense. Despite giving up just 8 earned runs in 24 innings over his first 4 starts, he lost 3 of them thanks to a combined 6 runs of support in those 4 games. His last time out went a bit better however, as Richards held the Royals to just 1 unearned run over 6 2/3 innings and the Angel offense finally showed up for him to give him his first victory in a game the Angels won 6-1.

Hamels skipped his last start because of a strained left groin muscle, but appears ready to go for today’s game against the Angels. Hamels has pitched very well in his 4 starts so far this season and has gotten plenty of support from the Ranger offense, leading to his 3-0 record. His last time out was April 20 against Houston and in that game he held the Astros to just 1 run on 5 hits over 6 2/3 innings to take the victory in a game the Rangers won 2-1.

Game Notes

  • Hamels and Richards have faced each other already this season, with Hamels getting the edge in a 4-1 victory. Hamels threw six innings and allowed one earned run on four hits in the April 9 meeting in Anaheim, while Richards allowed two earned runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings in defeat.
  • Among Angels hitters, Yunel Escobar (6-for-30), Albert Pujols (7-for-33) and Andrelton Simmons (2-for-21) have the most experience against Hamels, and have all struggled against him. Hamels, a longtime National Leaguer, is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in three starts against Los Angeles.
  • Bryan Holaday has caught each of Hamels’ last three starts after Robinson Chirinos, Hamels’ catcher on Opening Day, went to the disabled list. Holaday has had difficulty at the plate lately, as his average dipped to .171 after he went hitless in his last three games.
