Odorizzi has had a couple of rough outings but has been solid overall for the Rays in his 6 starts so far. He says he’s been striving to get “quicker outs” of late, and certainly managed to do so his last time out Sunday against Toronto. In that game he pitched 7 innings of 1-run, 2-hit ball, but took the no-decision in a game the Rays eventually lost 5-1.

~VS~

Jered Weaver (3-1, 5.40 ERA)

Weaver has been struggling with an average fastball hanging around in the low 80’s for much of the season, but he had been able to make it work up until his last outing Monday in Milwaukee. In that game he cruised through the first 4 innings, but things really went south in the 5th. He ended up giving up 4 runs in the 5th inning, but was able to finish the inning and move onto the 6th. In the 6th inning he wasn’t able to get anyone out and ended up being charged with 3 more runs in that inning. In the end he was charged with 7 runs on 11 hits over 5 innings to take the loss in a game the Angels dropped 8-5.

Game Notes

  • Nine of Odorizzi’s 12 earned runs allowed have come within the first two innings. He has a 6.75 ERA in in the first two innings and a 1.19 ERA after that.
  • Weaver is 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA at home. In 12 starts against the Rays, he’s 5-5 with a 3.81 ERA.
  • Albert Pujols has hit safely in nine of the last 11 games and has hit .301 with 11 home runs, 22 RBIs and 21 runs in his career against the Rays.
