While Verlander had a bit of a rocky start to his season in early April, he’s really come on through May and is showing flashes of his former self. Over his last 4 starts he’s given up just 4 earned runs on 16 hits across 30 1/3 innings. He’s also struck out 37 batters over that span, including 10 in each of his last two starts marking the 5th time in his career that he’s logged double-digit K’s in two consecutive starts. Beyond the 10 K’s his last outing was a gem as he held Philadelphia scoreless on 3 hits over 8 innings to earn his 4th victory of the season in a game the Tigers won 3-1.

Chacin has been solid for the Angels since being acquired from Atlanta on May 11 for a rookie-ball pitcher. If nothing else he’s provided decent depth as he’s posted a 4.67 ERA over 3 starts so far for the Angels. His last outing was solid if not spectacular as he allowed 3 runs on 5 hits over 6 innings in Texas, but still took the loss as the Angels dropped the game 4-1.

Game Notes

  • Verlander is 5-6 in 14 career starts against the Angels, one of just five teams that have a winning record against him. That list doesn’t include San Francisco, Miami and Cincinnati, none of which have faced Verlander in the regular season.
  • Detroit outfielder Cameron Maybin has had at least one hit in 11 of the 12 games he’s played since making his delayed debut. He missed the first six weeks of the season due to a wrist injury and soreness in his shoulder.
  • Angels sluggers Albert Pujols and Mike Trout have a combined 19 home runs against the Tigers, including four by Pujols in 2015.
