While Weaver hasn’t pitched horribly over the last month outside of a tough outing on May 12, he has gone 1-4 in the month. That’s partially due to Weaver’s largely average results and partially due to some poor run support. His last time out Saturday against Houston he ran into trouble in the 6th inning and ended up giving up 4 runs on 6 hits on 6 innings in a 4-2 loss.

Francisco Liriano (4-4, 4.63 ERA)

While Liriano hasn’t pitched extremely poorly over the last month, he has struggled with control, putting additional runners on base via walks which all seem to be coming in to score on him. Liriano went 2-3 with a 5.34 ERA in the month of May and has walked 15 batters in his last 4 starts. The walk bug got him again Sunday in Texas as 4 walks and 6 hits led to 5 runs against him in 6 innings, and he took the loss in a game the Pirates lost 6-2.

Game Notes

  • Playing in a National League park for three days, Angels designated hitter Albert Pujols likely will receive more reps at first base. He started at first in back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday against the Tigers and has said his surgically repaired right foot feels strong. Pujols is hitting .295/.394/.574 with five home runs and 15 RBIs in 17 games as a first baseman this season, as opposed to .203/.275/.355 with six homers and 21 RBIs in 35 games as a designated hitter.
  • Liriano, who has spent most of his career in the American League with the Twins and White Sox, is 2-4 with a 5.89 ERA in nine career appearances against the Angels, who making their first trip to PNC Park since 2004.
  • Weaver has struggled with velocity issues all season, but he saw an uptick in how hard he was throwing in his last outing. He hit as high as 87 mph on his fastball, but he couldn’t avoid trouble in the sixth inning as he took the loss against the Astros.
