Shoemaker has turned his season around in dominant form over his last four starts. He has allowed just 4 runs and has struck out 31 batters over his last 22 2/3 innings. He has also struck out 33 batters since his last walk, breaking the franchise record in that category previously held by Frank Tanana. Shoemaker’s last start was a good one Wednesday against Detroit as he allowed just 2 runs on 10 hits over 7 innings but took the loss in a game the Angels dropped 3-0.

Masahiro Tanaka (3-1, 2.78 ERA)

Tanaka has pitched very well all season long as he’s given up more than 2 earned runs just twice in his 11 starts this season. He did however suffer his first loss of the season his last time out despite pitching well in Toronto. In that game he gave up just 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits in 6 innings, but the Yankees went on to lose 7-0.

Game Notes

  • The return to AL play means C.J. Cron, who’s basically splitting time at first base and designated hitter, will return to the Angels’ lineup. Cron has driven in 21 runs over his last 30 games.
  • Gregorio Petit faces his former team this week. Petit mainly played for the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate last season, but he has become the Angels’ starting shortstop with Andrelton Simmons and Cliff Pennington on the disabled list.
  • Yankees right fielder Carlos Beltran entered Sunday carrying an eight-game hitting streak and has batted .323/.354/.645 since May 18, with five home runs, five doubles and 14 RBIs.
