Santana, who began his career with the Angels and pitched his first 8 seasons in Anaheim from 2005-2012, was having a brilliant season through May 19 as he had pitched to a 3.13 ERA to that point. He’s had a rough go of it his last 4 starts however as he’s given up 19 earned runs in 23 innings during that stretch. In his last outing Thursday against Miami he gave up 5 runs on 9 hits in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss in a game the Twins dropped 10-3.

Chacin will continue to try to find stability in his up & down season again tonight as he’s turned in some brilliant performances – including a complete game 4-hitter against Detroit on May 30 – and he’s also turned in some not-so-brilliant performances. His last outing Thursday in New York would fall into the not-so-brilliant category as he gave up 5 runs on 7 hits in just 5 1/3 innings to take the loss in a game the Angels dropped 6-3.

Game Notes

  • The Angels could get some help at shortstop soon, as manager Mike Scioscia said Andrelton Simmons could be activated from the 15-day disabled list during this three-game set. Simmons is currently on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake as he recovers from May 10 left thumb surgery.
  • Injuries have been an issue for the Angels, who have 11 players on the disabled list after reliever Cory Rasmus reinjured his right groin. He joins left fielder Daniel Nava and shortstop Cliff Pennington as Angels who have been on the DL twice this season.
  • Twins first baseman Joe Mauer has owned the Angels during his career. Entering play Monday, he has hit .335 (94-for-280) with 15 doubles, nine homers and 47 RBIs with an on-base percentage of .419. His batting average is the second-highest all-time against the Angels for a player with a minimum of 200 at-bats, trailing Astros second baseman Jose Altuve.
