Surkamp has struggled mightly this season, finding himself bouncing to and from Triple-A on multiple occasions this season. In 8 big league starts he’s had trouble both going deep into games and avoiding big innings, and has given up 7 home runs in his 8 starts. While he was able to post a quality start against the Angels on Sunday giving up just the 2 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings, he was on the wrong end of Jered Weaver‘s complete game gem and he and the A’s took the 2-0 loss.

Weaver has certainly struggled with inconsistency and fastball velocity all season, but he’s coming off his best start since his no-hitter in 2012. That start was Sunday in Oakland against Surkamp and the A’s and he tossed a complete game 3-hitter to take the victory in a game the Angels won 2-0.

Game Notes

  • Weaver has enjoyed success against the A’s in his career, going 14-11 with a 2.62 ERA. His ERA against Oakland is the second-lowest of any pitcher with more than 200 innings against them since the team moved in 1968, trailing only Luis Tiant (2.37 ERA).
  • A’s leadoff hitter Coco Crisp is 12-for-66 (.182) in his career against Weaver, with four doubles, one RBI and 12 strikeouts.
  • Angels center fielder Mike Trout has started 135 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the Majors.
