Inconsistency continues to plague Hector this season as after back-to-back strong outings on June 15 & 21 in which he gave up a combined 2 runs over 12 1/3 innings, he was rocked in Oakland his last time out on Sunday. In that game he gave up 6 runs on 7 hits – including back-to-back home runs – over 6 innings, but ended up with a no-decision as the Angels came back to win the game 7-6. Santiago has given up 17 home runs in 85 1/3 innings this season.

Clay Buchholz (3-8, 5.90 ERA)

Much like Santiago, Buchholz has struggled with inconsistency this season and was even removed from Boston’s rotation for a time and was sent to their bullpen. He made his way back into the rotation on June 21 and in two starts since has pitched okay but not great. His biggest problem has been the first inning. His last start was Sunday in Texas and in that game he gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss in a game the Red Sox dropped 6-2.

Game Notes

  • Red Sox first baseman Hanley Ramirez was out of Friday’s series opener against the Angels and is day to day. Ramirez exited Wednesday’s game against the Rays after injuring his right side on a swing in the sixth inning.
  • Angels infielder Yunel Escobar went through batting practice and agility tests on Friday and could potentially be available as early as Saturday. He’s missed each of the last seven games with a left knee injury.
  • In six games (five starts) against the Red Sox, Santiago is 1-3 with a 3.56 ERA. In two starts against Boston last season, he went 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA.
