While Santiago has battled inconsistency all season long, his last outing was very solid even though it took a back seat to the Angels’ 21-run explosion in Boston on Friday night. In that game Santiago gave up just 1 run (0 earned) on 5 hits in 6 innings of work, and most definitely took the victory as the Angel offense exploded on Boston, taking the game by the eye-popping final score of 21-2.

The Rays’ young 23 year-old rookie is just getting his feet wet in the Major Leagues as he will be making just his 6th career start and appearance this afternoon. While he has struggled with command during his brief time in the Major Leagues (15 walks in 25 2/3 innings), he’s been doing a decent job of keeping his team in ballgames. His last start was Saturday against Detroit and in that game he allowed 3 runs on 4 hits across 5 1/3 innings, but took the loss in a game the Rays dropped 3-2.

Game Notes

  • The Angels are 9-16 this season when facing a left-handed starter. Snell, a lefty, will be the opposition on Thursday.
  • Nick Franklin‘s 11 RBIs are the most by a Rays player on a homestand since Matt Joyce had 12 in 2010. Before this homestand, Franklin hadn’t recorded a hit this season.
  • The 10 balls that have hit the Tropicana Field catwalks in fair territory this season are the most since 2008. The single-season record is 13.
