Shoemaker’s season has really been a tale of two seasons. He struggled mightily early on and saw his season ERA balloon up to a season-high 9.12 after giving up 4 runs in 4 innings on May 11. In the 9 starts that followed, he completely turned his season around posting a 2.15 ERA over those 9 starts and lowering that season ERA to 4.12. His last time out Sunday in Boston was looking like another fine start as he shut out the Red Sox over the first 4 innings, but things got away from him in the 5th and he ended up being charged with 5 earned runs in the inning and was out of the game after just 4 2/3 innings. He took the loss in a game the Angels dropped 10-5.

Ubaldo Jimenez (5-8, 6.95 ERA)

Jimenez has really struggled this season and isn’t even averaging 5 innings per start. He’s pitched 80 1/3 innings across 17 starts for an average of just over 4 2/3 innings per start. He is also barely hanging onto his spot in Baltimore’s rotation and wasn’t even confirmed as tonight’s starter until a couple of hours ago. His last start was Sunday in Seattle and he once again struggled, giving up 6 runs on 6 hits in just 4 1/3 innings to take the loss in a game the Orioles dropped 9-4.

Game Notes

  • Former Angel Mark Trumbo is on a tear. The outfielder entered Thursday with a Major League-leading 26 homers and has 64 RBIs.
  • Angels catcher Geovany Soto, who had surgery on his right knee on May 19, is taking part in a rehab assignment and could be ready to rejoin the team by Saturday, at the earliest.
  • The Orioles will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their 1966 World Series title on Friday. To commemorate it, the O’s will wear 1966 replica throwback uniforms and will welcome back members of that team in a pregame ceremony.
