Where Should Mike Trout Hit?

No Comments on Where Should Mike Trout Hit?

When the Angels led the Majors in runs in 2014, they did it with Trout in the two-hole. And he still managed 35 HR, 111 RBI in that spot and won his first MVP award. Try this:

3B Yunel Escobar
CF Mike Trout
DH Albert Pujols
RF Kole Calhoun
1B CJ Cron
SS Andrelton Simmons
2B Danny Espinosa
LF Cameron Maybin / Ben Revere
C Martin Maldonado

Cam Bedrosian Placed on 10-Day DL; Other Moves

Apparently Cam Bedrosian suffered his groin strain some time in between his outing on Friday night and workouts on Saturday afternoon. He had 0.00 ERA. So did Andrew Bailey. Now both are on the DL. Bud Norris earned his first Major League save in the Angels‘ 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, and may get call to close until Cam returns. Blake Parker is also a candidate. Time will tell if either get the nod or it’s a closer-by-committee. Or, Mike Scioscia could just utilize his multi-innings relievers in the late innings.

Nerve Irritation Sends Richards to 60-Day DL

Turns out Angels right-hander Garrett Richards will be out for much longer than originally though, as he was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on Saturday. The former ace left his first start of the season with a biceps strain, and was unable to regain full strength despite some progress in his rehabilitation exercises.

Richards, 29, originally felt fine and was expecting to make his next start. But as the days went by, he was never able to start a throwing program to get himself ready to return. The cause was irritation to his cutaneous nerve, which is a system of nerves that goes all the way down a person’s arm, shown in this graphic.

Most likely the specific strain of nerve that is acting up is the medial cutaneous nerve inside his right bicep, right near his ulnar collateral ligament. This injury is probably a side effect of Garrett’s torn UCL, which he suffered almost exactly one year ago and opted for stem cell treatments instead of Tommy John Surgery.

Richards could have returned before the end of the month, as his biceps strain was very similar to that John Lackey in 2013. Lackey did have Tommy John Surgery the previous season, made his first start on April 6, returned on April 28, and finished strong with a 3.52 ERA in 189 1/3 innings. However, there was no irritation to his nerves in his arm. And so now the Halos will have to wait another four-to-six weeks.

The exact timetable as of right now is June 1.

The Offseason Journey of Juan Graterol

We’re a little late on this, but after five months of being picked up, dumped, and claimed again by five organizations in five months! This twice included the Angels. And now catcher Juan Graterol is back where he started last November, when the Halos first designated him for assignment.

Graterol, 28, was claimed by the Reds, DFA’d, then claimed by the Diamondbacks, and then was claimed by the Angels again. But when the Halos passed him through waivers the Blue Jays claimed him and invited him to their Major League camp. After being DFA’d again, the Angels claimed him once again…

The Angels acquired the backstop for a player to be named later or cash. Graterol was then called up, and fellow catcher Carlos Perez was sent down. That ended a five-month quest for Juan Graterol to find a spot on a roster. The only question now is how he will factor into the team’s catching situation.
