The purpose of this trade is probably to get more immediate help, as Damien Magnifico is in AAA while Jordan Kipper is at AA. Valdez’s command issues continued with the Angels and this is the second time they’ve DFA’d him. A team will likely show interest.
Magnifico, 26, has a 3.82 ERA, 7.0 K/9 and 1.7 K/BB rate in 346 innings in the minor leagues. The right-gander was drafted in 2012 by the Milwaukee Brewers, and made his MLB debut last season for the Brew Crew, appearing in three games and posting an ERA of 6.00. The Orioles picked him up for an international bonus slot. He has a blazing fastball with average breaking stuff, and has had command issues.
Kipper, 24, is also a righty and was off to a good start in the minors, posting a 1.74 ERA in 31 innings. He has a higher 4.02 ERA for his pro career. He was drafted by the Halos in 2014.
