With a spectacular performance against the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, Matt Shoemaker won himself American League Player of the Week honors. Throwing a complete game shutout and striking out 13 Sox, Shoe once again took another step toward proving he is the pitcher we all saw in 2014.
Black Beard has dazzled since coming back from the minors, although he didn’t start a game while down there. He was struggling to even make it through the fourth inning, as he was leaving his splitter up and batters were telling him what to go do with it. owever, has worked hard at getting that pitch back down, resulting in a 2.55 ERA with only 7 homers and 11 walks allowed in 81 innings.
The last two are the biggest factors. If you look at his 2014, and even his splits from last season, Shoe doesn’t normally walk hitters. This is something we’ve been monitoring over here for the past few seasons, and we came up with two conclusions.
If Matt Shoemaker keeps his splitter down and continues to keep his walk rate microscopic, he will be an ace. If not, he’ll get hammered. And that’s it.
Right now, the former amateur free agent is looking like an ace-in-the-making. And it was a great addition to seventies weekend!
