Angels acquire Tommy Hanson from Braves for Jordan Walden
Anaheim, CA - I need of starting pitching after the trade of Ervin Santana as well as the uncertain future of key free agent Zack Greinke, the Angels made a move to shore up their rotation.
GM Jerry Dipoto has acquired the 26 year-old Hanson who was 14-10, 4.48 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 in 174 2/3 innings in 2012.
Angel fans should keep in the back of their mind that Hanson has missed time with shoulder tendinitis and his fastball velocity has dropped from 92 to about 89. For the Angels sake Hanson can hold together while under club control through 2015.
In Walden the Braves acquire the fire balling reliever who saved 32 games and made the 2011 All-Star team. The 25 year-old righty became expendable with the signing of free agent Ryan Madson. With Ernesto Frieri, Kevin Jepsen and Scott Downs all expected to get the bulk of crucial situations, it made sense to move a young reliever with upside for starting pitching.
On paper the Angels rotation is still not frightening after you get past Jered Weaver. With C.J. Wilson, Hanson, Jerome Williams and Garret Richards as the starting 5 the Angels will likely continue to try and lure back free agent Zack Greinke.
