The Angels continued to add to their depleated pitching staff today by signing two free agent pitchers to contracts. Early in the day Jerry Dipoto added left handed reliever Sean Burnett to the rebuilt bullpen. Later in the evening Dipoto stuck again signing right handed starting pitcher Joe Blanton.

The 31 year old Bowling Green Kentucky native Joe Blanton pitched the 2012 season with the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers going 10-13, 4.71 ERA in 31 games (30 GS). Blanton has played nine big league seasons, starting his career with the Oakland Athletics. He is 83-75, 4.37 ERA over his career.

Sean Burnett on the other hand makes sense for the newly configured Angel bullpen. Burnett, 30, is 15-23, 3.58 ERA over six seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals.

The signing of Blanton is strange from the aspect of more talented starting pitchers available on the market. Brandon McCarthy, Anibal Sanchez and Ryan Dempster are still unsigned with more upside. It also seems likely that Zack Greinke's short time with the Angels will end with Texas seen as the favorite landing spot. Both players agreed to 2 year contracts with a team option for a third.
