Richards’ last start on Saturday was obviously one he’d like to forget as for the first time in his career he failed to get out of the first inning. All told, he gave up 6 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks over just 2/3 of an inning in a game the Yankees would go on to win 8-2. Thanks mostly to that nightmare of an outing, Richards has posted a 5.30 ERA over his last 3 starts.

Colome will be looking to fare better against the Angels tonight than he did back at Angel Stadium on June 1. In that start, Colome surrendered 5 runs on 3 home runs across 6 innings in a game the Angels won 7-3. In his last outing Saturday in Seattle, Colome allowed just 1 run on 7 hits over 6 innings. Overall this season, Colome is 2-1 with a 4.22 ERA in 4 starts at Tropicana Field.

Game Notes:

  • Colome’s start will mark the 25th time this season that a rookie pitcher has taken the ball for the Rays — tops in the Major Leagues.
  • Albert Pujols needs one home run to assume sole possession of 16th place on Major League Baseball’s all-time home run list. The Angels’ first-baseman is currently tied with Yankee great Mickey Mantle with 536.
  • Tonight’s game marks the Angels final road game against AL East opponents this season. In fact, the Angels only have to travel to the Eastern time zone one more time this season – a trip through Detroit & Cleveland August 25-30.
