After mostly struggling through his first 8 starts of the season, Hellickson had appeared to have turned things around during his previous 3 starts before going to Dodger Stadium on Wednesday. In those 3 starts he had gone 3-0 and posted a 3.28 ERA. At Dodger Stadium on Wednesday however, he was touched for 5 runs on 6 hits over just 3 2/3 innings.

Garrett Richards (6-4, 3.97 ERA)

Richards bounced back nicely from his career-worst outing at Yankee Stadium on June 6 – a game in which he gave up 6 runs on 5 hits in just 2/3 of an inning. On Thursday in Tampa Bay however, he held the Rays to 2 runs on 4 hits over 7 innings, striking out 7 to take the win.

Game Notes:

  • Because Hellickson pitched in the American League before this season, several Angel players have seen him before. Albert Pujols has the most career at-bats against him (1-for-8). Mike Trout (2-for-4 with a HR) and Chris Iannetta (2-for-5) have had the most success against Hellickson
  • No Diamondback player has more than 5 career at-bats against Richards. Only Chris Owings, A.J. Pollock, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia have hits off Richards.
