C.J. Wilson last faced Houston back on June 23 in a game in Anaheim that didn’t go so well for Wilson. In that game the Astros roughed Wilson up for 7 runs on 8 hits in just 3 1/3 innings. In 5 starts since that game however, Wilson is 3-1 with a 2.56 ERA. Wilson’s last start was Wednesday at home against the Twins. He held the Twins to 2 runs on 5 hits over 5 innings, but did throw 105 pitches in those 5 innings. He did however take the win as the Angels won the game 5-2.

Collin McHugh (11-5, 4.25 ERA)

Collin McHugh’s last game against the Angels was also that June 23 game in Anaheim. McHugh fared much better than C.J. Wilson did in that game, as McHugh held the Angels to 2 runs on 9 hits in 8 innings to take the win. In his 5 starts since that game, McHugh is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA. McHugh’s last start was also Wednesday and it was at home against the Red Sox. He held the Red Sox to 2 runs on 7 hits over 7 innings to take the win in a game the Astros won 4-2.

Game Notes:

  • McHugh has held Mike Trout to just two hits in 11 career at-bats — a .182 batting average — and has struck him out five times. Trout does have a homer off McHugh.
  • Angels left fielder Matt Joyce had to leave Sunday’s game against the Rangers due to injury following a scary collision with shortstop Erick Aybar on a Delino DeShields popup to shallow left field. As Aybar tumbled over Joyce, he appeared to knee Joyce in the head. The Angels would have Daniel Robertson and newly acquired Shane Victorino as left-field options for Tuesday’s game.
  • Although Aybar was able to remain in Sunday’s game after the collision, as was Mike Trout after landing awkwardly on his left wrist on a diving catch attempt earlier in the same inning, the two might need to be reevaluated before Tuesday’s game.
