Richards has certainly been pitching very well recently, having gone 7 or more innings in 6 of his last 8 starts. Over that span Richards is 5-3 with a 2.34 ERA and has held opponents to a .224 batting average. Richards has also given up just 3 earned runs over his last 17 innings, having tossed the complete game shutout against the Red Sox on July 18, and in his last start against Minnesota he surrendered just a 3-run home run to Trevor Plouffe in 8 strong innings but unfortunately took the loss as the Angels were shut out by Ervin Santana and the Twins.

Lance McCullers (4-3, 2.60 ERA)

Since his call-up on May 18, the young 21 year-old righty has been pitching very well for the Astros. In his first 12 career starts, McCullers has given up more than 3 earned runs just once, and has averaged nearly 6 innings per start. McCullers has faced the Angels once – on May 24 in Anaheim – and held them to 1 run on 4 hits in 6 innings in a 2-1 Angel victory. McCullers’ last start was Thursday against Boston. In that game he held the Red Sox to 2 runs on 6 hits over 5 innings in a game the Astros won 5-4.

Game Notes:

  • Angels center fielder Mike Trout was out of the lineup on Tuesday, while getting an MRI on his sore left wrist. He’s currently listed as day-to-day.
  • The Angels will probably debut their two new outfielders on Wednesday, with the left-handed-hitting David DeJesus and David Murphy expected to start against righties.
  • Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (.320/.393/.360 slash line in 28 plate appearances) and first baseman Chris Carter (.300/.391/.500 in 23) have historically done well against Richards.
