Shoemaker, who has had an up & down season and has been basically been fighting for his spot in the rotation ever since the emergence of rookie Andrew Heaney in the Angel rotation, has put together a solid month of July going 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA across 3 starts and one relief appearance. His last outing was a start against the Twins on July 21, and one of his better ones this year. He tossed 6 innings of shutout baseball allowing just 2 hits and striking out 10 to take the win in a game the Angels won 7-0.

Scott Kazmir (6-5, 2.24 ERA)

The Astros’ faithful will get their first look at Kazmir at home this evening as he’ll be making his first start at Minute Maid Park since the July 23 trade that sent him to Houston from Oakland for a pair of minor-league prospects. Kazmir certainly did not disappoint in his Astros debut as he held the Royals scoreless over 7 innings on just 3 hits in a game the Astros won 4-0 at Kauffman Stadium.

Game Notes:

  • Shoemaker tied his season high with 10 strikeouts in his last outing, when he tossed six innings of shutout ball on July 21 against Minnesota. He has a lifetime ERA of 8.76 against Houston.
  • Kazmir fired seven shutout innings in his Astros debut — a 4-0 win in Kansas City last Friday — becoming just the eighth pitcher in franchise history to post seven or more shutout innings in his debut.
  • Conor Gillaspie, acquired from the White Sox on Friday, had just five hits in his previous 29 at-bats before joining the Angels. His second-inning RBI triple on Wednesday gave him three extra-base hits and six hits in his first four games with the Angels.
