Heaney has been absolutely brilliant since making his Angel debut on June 24, taking the rotation spot of the injured Jered Weaver. Heaney will put his 5-0 record on the line against the Dodgers today, along with his 6-start streak of going at least 6 innings and allowing 2 or fewer runs. Heaney’s last start was Sunday against Texas. In that game he held the Rangers to 2 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings and took the win in a game the Angels won 13-7.

Kershaw was originally slated to pitch the Dodgers’ series finale against Oakland on Wednesday but was a late scratch due to a hip issue. He was then slated to pitch the opener of this series last night, but was again a late scratch. He is apparently good to go for today however, and will toe the rubber in the midst of a 29-inning scoreless streak. He has pitched shutouts in each of his last 3 outings, with two of them being complete games. His last start was July 23 in New York against the Mets – a complete game shutout where he allowed just 3 hits and struck out 11.

Game Notes:

  • Heaney has been consistent this season for the Angels; he’s lasted at least six innings and allowed two runs or fewer in all of his starts. He’s earned a win in five straight starts and the Angels are a perfect 6-0 when he takes the hill.
  • Albert Pujols has owned Kershaw in his career. The slugging first baseman has hit .455 lifetime against Kershaw and has a .586 on-base percentage in 29 plate appearances.
  • Even with Kershaw starting on Saturday, Angels manager Mike Scioscia ruled out the possibility of Pujols starting at third base — which would allow the right-handed-hitting C.J. Cron to play first base. The Angels will instead start either Conor Gillaspie, a left-handed hitter, or Taylor Featherston, who’s batting .139.
