Richards is going through a stretch of his season where he’s lost 4 out of his last 6 outings, but he really hasn’t pitched all that poorly over that stretch. He has averaged 7 innings per start and posted a 3.86 ERA over that stretch, but has also given up 6 home run balls during the period as well. Richards last pitched Saturday night against Baltimore and posted a quality start, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits over 6 innings, but took the loss as the Angels were shut out by the final score of 5-0.

Jeremy Guthrie (8-7, 5.84 ERA)

In what can only be described as a rough season for the Royals’ veteran righty, Guthrie has especially struggled of late having posted a 7.14 ERA and allowed 7 home runs over his last 5 starts. During that stretch, he’s given up 48 hits and 23 earned runs over just 29 innings. Guthrie’s last start was another rough one Saturday night against the White Sox. In that game he gave up 6 runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings, but amazingly he managed to come away with the victory as the Royals won the game 7-6.

Game Notes:

  • With outfielder Matt Joyce on the disabled list, Mike Trout is the Angels’ biggest threat against Guthrie. In 16 career at-bats, Trout has six hits and four RBIs, including one home run. Only Erick Aybar has more hits against Guthrie, carrying a 7-for-34 lifetime record.
  • Richards has been a part of Los Angeles’ road woes, struggling away from Angel Stadium. The right-hander carries a 4.84 ERA and 4-6 record on the road, while he has a 2.53 ERA and 7-3 record at home.
  • The Royals swept the Angels in both clubs’ second series of the season, a three-game set from April 10-12 in Anaheim.
