Indians at Angels

Cleveland Indians (48-57, 5th AL Central) @ Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (56-49, 2nd AL West)

Angel Stadium of Anaheim – Anaheim, CA

Weather Forecast @ 1st Pitch: Sunny, 83F, Winds W (Out to RF) 8mph, 0% Chance of Rain

Pitching Matchup:

Carlos Carrasco (11-8, 4.03 ERA)

Carrasco is another pitcher who has had quite an up & down season so far this year, but he has been extremely solid in 3 of his last 4 outings. On July 11 & 19 against Oakland & Cincinnati respectively, Carrasco gave up a total of 3 earned runs on 10 hits over 13 innings. Then on July 25 against the White Sox he gave up 6 runs on 7 hits in just 4 innings. His last start was stellar however as he pitched a complete game allowing just 1 run on 2 hits to Oakland on Thursday.

Matt Shoemaker (5-7, 4.24 ERA)

While Shoemaker entered the month of July looking like he was going to be the odd man out of the Angel rotation upon the return of the injured Jered Weaver, Shoemaker’s stellar performance along with a possibly season-ending injury to C.J. Wilson have combined to put the Angels into a position where they’ll have to rely heavily on Shoemaker down the stretch. Shoemaker seems up to the task of late, as since June 26 – a stretch of 5 starts and 1 relief appearance, Shoemaker has posted a 2.01 ERA over 31 1/3 innings, all with his rotation spot seemingly on the line. Shoemaker’s last start was Thursday down in Houston where he tossed 7 brilliant shutout innings allowing just 3 hits, but the Angels eventually lost the game in the 9th on Jason Castro‘s walk-off 3-run home run.

Game Notes:

  • Expect Albert Pujols to be back in the Angels lineup on Tuesday after the veteran first baseman got a routine day off on Monday.
  • David Murphy, who was traded from the Indians to the Angels just before the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline, is actually the only current Angels hitter to have homered off Carrasco.
  • Jose Ramirez, who led off and started at second base for the Indians in Monday’s series opener with Jason Kipnis on the disabled list, should continue to see playing time at second and in the leadoff spot.
