With the trade deadline coming to an end the Angels have been very active acquiring Shane Victorino, David DeJesus, David Murphy and Conor Gillaspie. That being said i decided to take a look back on the trade that had many Halos fans very upset.
The day was December 11th, 2014 yep you guessed it the day Howie Kendrick was sent up the 5 for a lefty kid with upside. How could the Angels trade our everyday 2nd baseman? the guy who was a constant in the lineup! Why?! The trade left many asking who is going to play second? where are we going to get the offense his bat leaves behind? is this Andrew Heaney kid going to make the pitching staff in the upcoming 2015 season? Why?!
With many questions surrounding 2nd base going into spring training the Angels looked to Johnny Giavotella, Grant Green and Josh Rutledge to battle it out in Tempe Arizona. What happened was that Giavotella ran away with the battle having a great spring training impressing the Angels coaching staff and many fans. What happened next was even more surprising Johnny Giavotella would become the opening day 2nd baseman and he has not looked back since. Now I’m not saying the guy is Roberto Alomar at 2nd base but what he is, is very solid with very decent numbers .267 batting average 3 home runs and 36 RBI very decent, compared to Kendrick’s .283 avg 7 home runs and 40 RBI, numbers that are not to far off, but aside from just the numbers Giavotella has come through in many clutch situations with the big hit.
But what about that Heaney kid? why did the Angels trade Kendrick?. Here’s why, Heaney under club control through 2021 arbitration eligible until 2018, 24 years old, and left handed. It does not stop there, since Heaney joined the rotation with the injury to Jered Weaver, Heaney has been very impressive going 5-0 with a 1.79 era forcing manager Mike Scioscia to keep Heaney in the rotation when Weaver returns from the DL. His poise and composure on the mound shows that Heaney was why the Angels traded away the fan favorite Kendrick, numbers do not often lie but what impresses me is that Heaney tossed into the rotation, has taken the ball and has not backed up and he continues to prove to Angels fans that he is why Howie Kendrick got traded that day. 2021 .
